MY JOURNEY WITH GASTRIC SLEEVE SURGERY: FROM 168KG TO CLIMBING MT FUJI

Hi, I'm Shanai, also known as Fit4fuji. At my heaviest, I weighed 168kg (370lbs). I decided to undergo gastric sleeve surgery not just for my physical health, but primarily for my mental well-being. Being housebound and dealing with multiple mental illnesses, I knew something had to change.

**Preparing for Surgery**

I dove deep into research, cut down on soft drinks, and joined a support group of others who had gone through weight loss surgery. For me, it was a matter of life or death, so I wasn't afraid of the possibility of dying during surgery.

**The Initial Struggle**

In the days and weeks following the surgery, self-doubt crept in. I feared failure and worried that the surgery might not work for me. My fear of anaesthesia awareness also added to my anxiety. But I pushed through those tough early weeks.

**A New Lease on Life**

Since the surgery, my life has transformed dramatically. I now leave the house, am off certain medications, attend and host events, and have made new friends. My mindset has shifted; I'm more joyful and optimistic about the future. Before, living felt like a chore.

**Challenges and Triumphs**

One of the biggest challenges was dealing with the mental aspect of not using food to cope. It was incredibly hard, but I persevered and now thrive. My diet has changed from daily fast food to high-protein meals, and I exercise regularly for my mental health and fitness goals.

**Unexpected Benefits**

Weight loss surgery saved my life in ways I never expected. I'm more joyful to be around, I go out and do things, and I've built stronger relationships with family and friends. My partner has been my rock, and I've met amazing new friends who understand my journey.

**Lessons Learned**

Looking back, I wish I had addressed my eating issues sooner and known about the potential hormone changes post-surgery. The sleeve is only a tool; it’s crucial to address emotional eating and make healthy choices.

**Staying Motivated**

Old photos remind me of how far I’ve come and keep me motivated. Seeing the sadness in my eyes in my before photos reinforces how much my life has improved.

**Future Goals**

I’m aiming to climb Mt Fuji in Japan in 2025! Losing over 100kg (220lbs) in 18 months has been the hardest yet most rewarding journey. I wouldn’t change a thing.

**Advice for Others**

To anyone considering weight loss surgery, remember that the sleeve is only part of the solution. You still need to make healthy choices and address any underlying issues like emotional eating.
