NAVIGATING THE GP MAZE: MY JOURNEY TO FINDING THE RIGHT FIT

The Challenge of Finding a New GP

Damo, I’m excited for this. Today, I want to talk about my experience of finding a new GP after our move from Sunshine Coast to Geelong. Leaving behind a GP of 12 years, who wasn’t particularly great, was a daunting task.

Moving and the Need for a New GP

When we moved down here, one of my biggest concerns was knowing that I’d need to find a new GP. It’s stressful when you’ve had a long-standing relationship with your doctor, even if it wasn’t perfect.

My Chronic Pain Management

I’ve had chronic pain for many years and have been under a pain management doctor. Moving meant finding a GP who could work with my pain management needs. My new GP, although excellent in many ways, was hesitant about prescribing my pain medication. Despite letters from my pain specialist, he required a new letter every month, which was costly and impractical.

The Stress and Stigma

This situation caused a lot of anxiety. As someone with a history of bariatric surgery, going to any health provider brings its own set of challenges and anxieties.

The Search for a New GP

Running out of pain meds, I had to find a new GP. I decided I wanted a GP who wouldn’t make me feel like a drug seeker and who would work with my pain management team. Finding such a GP was challenging, but I was determined.

HotDoc and Google to the Rescue

Using the HotDoc app and Google, I searched for GPs specialising in chronic pain near Geelong. I called a clinic, and the receptionist recommended Dr. Joe. Amazingly, he had a cancellation and I got an appointment within two hours.

Interviewing My New GP

I went to the appointment with no expectations, ready to see if Dr. Joe was a good fit. I explained that I was there to interview him. To my relief, he understood and appreciated my approach. He looked at my records, understood my needs, and even provided the necessary prescriptions.

The Empowerment of Finding the Right Fit

Leaving with what I needed, I felt empowered. Dr. Joe was aware of the blood tests required post-weight loss surgery and took care of everything. It was one of the most empowering GP visits I’ve ever had.

Importance of the Right Medical Support

Having a GP who listens and works with all your specialists is crucial. They are the ones who hold everything together, especially for those of us with chronic conditions. It’s vital to have that forethought and ensure that the plans put in place by specialists are enacted.

Encouragement for Others

I encourage everyone to be brave enough to look for a new GP if needed. Ask questions and ensure they are the right fit for you. More doctors are open to this approach, and it’s essential to advocate for your health.
